Rebel Recharge - Is it Gambling? The Role of Change in Games

Program Description: From social casino games to e-sports to virtual reality and in-game payments, many familiar activities blend the two concepts of gambling and gaming. In the most prolific current example, loot boxes hits the news on a near-daily basis in legislative and international regulatory debates. But loot boxes are just scratching the surface of gambling access in video games and e-sports. Dr. Abarbanel will review where we have been along the journey of gambling and gaming convergence internationally, including perspectives from the e-sports field and gaming industry, and discuss where this intersection is showing up in unusual and unexpected ways.

Presenter: Dr. Brett Abarbanel, Director of Research at the UNLV International Gaming Institute
